How to delete your Google search history completely, and what deletion does not reach
Short answer
Clearing your Chrome history is not the same thing as deleting the activity saved to your Google Account. They are separate systems with separate controls, and Google says so directly. If you are working through a full cleanup rather than just Google, start from how to delete your digital footprint.
Chrome's history records the pages you visited in that browser. Your Google Account can separately hold Search activity, Web & App Activity, YouTube history, Maps Timeline and more. Emptying one does not empty the other.
Almost every mistake people make here comes from confusing three different actions:
| Action | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Delete | Removes activity already saved under that control | Stop anything new from being saved |
| Turn off | Stops new activity being saved under that control | Remove anything already saved |
| Auto delete | Keeps activity for a set period, then removes it automatically | Apply to controls you have not configured |
Understanding that table is most of the job. The rest of this article is where each control lives and what it actually covers.
Does deleting Chrome history delete Google search history?
No, not necessarily.
Chrome browsing history and Google Account activity are different types of data held in different places. Google explicitly identifies Search history and other Google activity as things that may need deleting separately from Chrome browsing data.
There is one real exception. If you are signed into Chrome and syncing history, deleting synced Chrome history can remove it from your other signed-in devices too. That is still not the same as clearing every activity category in your Google Account — it is Chrome history propagating, nothing more.
How to delete Chrome browsing history
On a computer, the path is:
Chrome → More → Delete browsing data
Note the wording. Google renamed this from "Clear browsing data" to Delete browsing data, so older guides that tell you to look for "Clear" are describing a button that is no longer labelled that way.
Set Time range to All time, then choose what to remove. The usual categories are browsing history, cookies and other site data, and cached images and files. Additional categories appear depending on your device and configuration.
Deleting browsing history removes visited addresses from Chrome's History page, along with shortcuts to those pages and certain address bar predictions.
Does this delete my saved passwords? Only if you specifically select a password-related option where one is offered. Clearing browsing history does not require deleting saved passwords — but the advanced deletion screen puts several categories in front of you at once, so read the checkboxes before confirming.
What Google My Activity is, and how to read it
Google My Activity is the central place in your Google Account for viewing and managing activity across many Google services. Depending on your settings it can include searches you ran, sites you visited and videos you watched.
To look before you delete:
Google Account → Data & Privacy → My Activity
Individual entries can show the date and time and why the activity was saved. In some cases they also show device, application or location information. Google Dashboard gives a broader summary across Google services.
Reviewing before deleting is worth the ten minutes. Deletion is not reversible, and most people find at least one category they did not know was on.
How to delete My Activity
Open My Activity, then:
Delete → All time → select services → Next → Delete
You are not limited to everything-or-nothing. Google lets you delete a single search, one day's activity, a custom date range, or all of it.
What "permanently delete" actually means
This is where most guides on this subject overpromise, so be precise.
Google says that when you delete activity, it begins a process designed to remove that activity from its products and systems. It also says some information may be retained for purposes including security, fraud prevention, legal obligations, financial record-keeping and maintaining its services. Google further states that anonymised versions of some data may remain after account-associated information is removed.
So the technically accurate statement is this:
Google also warns that once Search history is erased from your account, you cannot recover it through the normal account interface. Both things are true at once: irreversible for you, and not necessarily absolute everywhere.
If you have seen an article promising to "erase everything Google knows about you," that article is describing something Google's own controls do not claim to do.
Search Services History and Web & App Activity
Google is currently changing these controls, which is why two people can follow the same guide and see different screens.
Search Services History is the newer control governing whether your interactions with Google's Search-related services are saved while you are signed in. Google names seven services:
- Search
- Maps
- Shopping
- Flights
- Hotels
- Translate
- News
It does not cover everything. Google states that Chrome, Gemini Apps, Google Assistant and YouTube save history under other settings. That matters, because older privacy guides tell people to switch off Web & App Activity and assume the job is done.
Web & App Activity is the older control, and it continues to govern activity for certain other Google services. Google says the new settings are rolling out gradually, and that if what you see does not match the new controls, Search services are still governed by Web & App Activity on your account.
Both live at:
Google Account → Data & Privacy → History Settings
Where available, Google offers both Turn off and Turn off and delete activity. As the table at the top says, those are different actions.
One more distinction worth holding onto: turning off Personalized Recommendations does not turn off or delete Search Services History. Personalisation and history are separate controls. If your goal is deletion, personalisation settings will not get you there.
YouTube history
Google Account → Data & Privacy → History Settings → YouTube History
YouTube History covers both searches you ran on YouTube and videos you watched. You can delete existing activity, stop future history being saved, or set automatic deletion.
Be aware of the trade-off: turning YouTube History off changes the recommendations you get. For some people that is the point. For others it makes the product noticeably worse. Decide deliberately rather than switching everything off in one sitting.
Maps Timeline — the one most people have backwards
Location History is now called Timeline, and the way it works has changed in a way that is worth knowing.
Google says Timeline is off by default and can only be turned on if you opt in. If it is on for you, that is because it was enabled at some point — possibly years ago on a previous phone.
Google also says Timeline data is now held primarily on your device, with an optional encrypted backup to Google's servers. So "delete my location history" is partly a question about your handset, not only about your account.
Review it at:
Google Account → Data & Privacy → Timeline
Incognito
Incognito is a common source of confusion here, and we have covered it separately and at length in What does Incognito mode actually hide, and who can still see your browsing?
The one point specific to this article: Incognito normally keeps Search activity out of your Google Account — but if you sign into your Google Account inside a private window, your Search activity may be stored in that account anyway. Signing in undoes the part of Incognito people are relying on.
What deleting Google history does not delete
Deleting your Google activity affects Google's systems. It sends no instruction to anybody else. Records may still be held independently by:
- Websites you visited, in their own server logs
- Your employer's firewall, DNS filtering, proxy or endpoint software
- Your internet service provider
- Your mobile carrier
- Browser extensions
- Advertising companies and applications you have used
- Other cloud services
Can my employer still see it? Potentially, yes. Deleting Chrome history removes it from Chrome. It does not reach into a corporate firewall log, a DNS filter or an endpoint agent. Those are separate systems with separate retention, run by someone else.
Google also notes that some activity is not shown in My Activity at all, which is why the Other Activity section inside My Activity is worth reviewing during a thorough cleanup.
Why does deleted history still show up?
Three common explanations, in order of likelihood:
- You deleted Chrome history but not Google Account activity, or the other way round.
- A device that was offline still holds the old data. Google says deleted Search history can temporarily appear on a device that was offline, and should clear once it reconnects.
- Cached browser data is producing the appearance of history that is no longer there.
A reasonable starting configuration
There is no single correct setup. For someone who wants meaningfully better privacy without making Google's products worse to use:
| Control | Suggested setting |
|---|---|
| Chrome browsing history | Clear periodically |
| Search Services History | Auto delete |
| Web & App Activity | Review carefully; auto delete if retained |
| YouTube History | Auto delete, unless long-term history is useful to you |
| Timeline | Off unless actively used |
| Personalized Recommendations | Personal preference |
| Personalized ads | Off if personalisation adds little for you |
| Chrome Sync | Review which categories are synced |
| My Activity / Other Activity | Review periodically |
If your requirements are stronger than that, turning individual history categories off is better than merely shortening how long they are kept.
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete all my Google history at once?
There is no single button. Open Google My Activity, select Delete, choose All time, select the services to include and confirm. Then clear Chrome browsing data separately, because Chrome history and Google Account activity are different systems.
Does clearing my Chrome history delete my Google search history?
Not necessarily. Clearing Chrome removes the browsing history stored in that browser. Search activity saved to your Google Account is governed separately, through Search Services History or Web & App Activity depending on your account.
What is the difference between Delete, Turn off and Auto delete?
Delete removes activity already saved. Turn off stops new activity being saved but leaves existing activity in place. Auto delete keeps activity for a chosen period and then removes it automatically. Doing one does not do the others.
Can deleted Google search history be recovered?
Google states that once Search history is erased from your account, you cannot recover it through the normal account history interface. Treat deletion as permanent from your side, and review before you delete.
Does Google still hold data after I delete my activity?
Google says it begins removing activity from its products and systems when you delete it, but that some information can be retained for security, fraud prevention, legal obligations, financial record-keeping and service continuity, and that anonymised data no longer associated with your account may remain.
What is Google Search Services History?
It is Google's newer control for whether interactions with its Search-related services are saved to your account while signed in. Google names Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate and News. It does not cover Chrome, Gemini Apps, Google Assistant or YouTube, which save history under other settings.
Why do the settings in my account look different from the guide?
Because Google is rolling out Search Services History gradually. Google says that if the new settings do not match what you see, history and personalisation for Search services are still controlled by Web & App Activity on your account.
Does turning off personalised ads delete my Google history?
No. Personalisation settings and history controls are separate. Google states that turning off Personalized Recommendations does not turn off or delete Search Services History or other account activity. Use My Activity if deletion is the goal.
Is Google Maps location history on by default?
No. Location History is now called Timeline, and Google says it is off by default and can only be turned on if you opt in. Google also says Timeline data is now held primarily on your device, with an optional encrypted backup.
Can my employer see my browsing history after I delete it?
Potentially. Deleting Chrome history removes it from Chrome, and deleting My Activity affects Google's systems. Neither reaches records held independently by a corporate firewall, DNS filter, proxy or endpoint agent. Those are separate systems with their own retention.
