Can Zoom automatically create action items?
Product names, licensing, workflow templates, My Notes attachment rules, and admin controls were checked against Zoom documentation on 28 August 2026. These details change. Confirm against live Zoom pages and your own tenant before you buy, enable workflows, or write to a system of record.
Short answer
Yes, with conditions. Zoom can pull candidate action items out of a meeting in three documented ways: (1) the meeting summary's next-steps / SMART action items, (2) Zoom Tasks sourced from Meetings, Chat, and Mail, and (3) a ZoomMate workflow that creates tasks or tickets when the meeting ends. None of those is a guarantee that the owner, due date, or wording is correct. Treat every auto-created item as a draft until a person approves it.
This is the action-items companion to the Zoom post-meeting automation pillar. Licensing for agentic workflows: paid ZoomMate and Custom AI Companion users in the US per Zoom KB0085380 (retrieved 28 August 2026), with a limited free allowance of up to 10 runs per month. Task-creating nodes that call third-party apps consume AI credits.
What does Zoom extract on its own?
The included meeting-summary feature (eligible paid Zoom Workplace plans; not a ZoomMate-only SKU) produces next steps and action items from the conversation. Zoom's Meeting Summary to Salesforce template is explicit that those items are framed as SMART action items. AI Companion-era guidance still holds: summaries can omit details, misattribute statements, or assign work to the wrong person. Say the owner and the date out loud if you want them in the extract.
Zoom Tasks can source action items across Meetings, Chat, and Mail. That is Capture + a light Act layer inside Zoom. It is not Jira, Asana, or Salesforce unless a workflow writes there.
How does a workflow create action items automatically?
| # | Path | Where the task lands | Approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Meeting summary only | Inside the summary. Someone copies it by hand. | Human copy is the approval. |
| 2 | Zoom Tasks from summary / workflow | Zoom Tasks | Always ask until assignees are trusted. |
| 3 | Post-Meeting Action Tracker template | Zoom's tracker template (KB0085380 homepage card) | Yes if other people are assigned. |
| 4 | Jira / Asana / similar connector | That system of record | Always ask. Tickets notify other teams. |
| 5 | Salesforce follow-up tasks on a note or opportunity | Salesforce | Always ask. See the Salesforce companion. |
For My Notes: attach a post-meeting template or describe in plain English "create a Zoom Task for each action item and assign it only after I approve." You can attach during scheduling, in meeting, or after (unless 0-day retention). Up to 20 workflows per note.
What will not happen automatically?
- Zoom will not invent a named owner you never mentioned.
- Zoom will not know your RACI. "We should look at that" is not a task.
- A Chat-based Auto-Create Jira Tickets template fires on an emoji in Chat, not on meeting end, unless you also build a meeting-ended Jira path.
- Privileged, HR, and 1:1 meetings should not share an "all my meetings" action-item workflow with customer calls.

Frequently asked questions
Can Zoom automatically create action items?
Yes: meeting summary next steps, Zoom Tasks, Post-Meeting Action Tracker, and ZoomMate workflows into Jira, Salesforce, or similar. Every auto-created item is a draft until a person approves the owner and due date.
Does this require recording?
Meeting summary is separate from cloud recording. Workflows that run from My Notes need transcription enabled for the host or, for participants, host permission to transcribe with My Notes.
Will it assign the right person?
Only if the conversation named them clearly. Zoom documents that generated content can misassign action items. Always ask before a task notifies someone else.
Is Zoom Tasks enough?
For work that should stay in Zoom, yes. If Jira or Salesforce is the system of record, the workflow must write there on approval. Do not keep two competing task lists.
Do action-item workflows consume AI credits?
Third-party connectors and AI-powered nodes consume Zoom AI credits and need a ZoomMate license, per KB0085380 and KB0088152. Zoom Tasks inside Zoom may not; confirm the node list in your builder.
Should Autopilot create tickets in production Jira?
Not on day one. Create Zoom Tasks first. Add Jira when the extract quality is good and Always ask is on.
